A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We're currently at the scene of a two-vehicle collision on the northbound stretch of the M40 between junction 13 (Bishops Tachbrook) and junction 14 (Leamington).
"The road is expected to be closed for at least the next few hours so please avoid the area and follow diversions where possible."
Normal traffic conditions are expected to return between 12.30pm and 12.45pm later today.
Updating drivers, National Highways shared on X: "The M40 remains closed northbound between J13 (Bishops Tachbrook) and J14 (Barford) following a serious collision. We're now reporting delays on approach to the closure of two hours above usual journey times.
"Emergency Services remain in attendance. Plan ahead if travelling in the area, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
A driver caught in the traffic shared that he "came off at J11 Banbury, picked up the A423 Southam Road, pretty much a clear run to Princethorpe where there’s some roadworks, this then takes me to Coventry, pick up the M6 at J2 for my Deliveries into B’ham".
"This route keeps you east of the M40 and away from all the Congestion in the towns where everyone is trying to get off at 12, 13 or 14!! Just my advice if you’re picking this up south of Banbury and heading north," he added.
The M40 links the UK’s two biggest cities, London and Birmingham and spans 89 miles in length, starting at Uxbridge at Junction 1 and ending at Junction 17 in Birmingham.
The RAC detailed: "Accident hotspots are difficult to pinpoint because accidents can occur at anytime, and for several reasons. As always, the best driving advice is to drive with caution, take regular breaks, and receive M40 traffic updates and travel news to be aware of any accidents and avoid resulting delays.
"Make use of our road planner to receive M40 traffic updates and M40 travel news. These updates can inform drivers of busy junctions and tailbacks."
