Emergency services are in attendance at the incident

Drivers are being urged to avoid the M25 following a "police-led incident" which has shut the major motorway, with miles of congestion on the approach.

While the M25 clockwise between J25 (Enfield) and J26 (Waltham Abbey) has reopened, drivers are still dealing with long delays.

The police-led incident forced the M25 to close, with up to five miles of congestion on the approach.

National Highways: East warned drivers of the delays and suggested that people should allow extra journey time as delays build.

NATIONAL HIGHWAYS

National Highways has published a diversion route to help motorists avoid the area as delays remain.

Drivers should follow the hollow triangle symbol on local road signs.

  • Exit at J25 and at the roundabout take the third exit onto the A10 towards London
  • Follow the A10 southbound to the Great Cambridge Junction with the A406 North Circular
  • Take the first exit onto the A406 North Circular eastbound
  • Remain on the A406 towards the M11
  • Join the M11 northbound at J4
  • Follow the M11 northbound to J6 and exit to re-join the M25

Drivers travelling on the M25 today are also being warned to prepare for further issues following a vehicle fire.

Residual delays remain along the A3 northbound exit slip to the M25 after a massive blaze this morning forced the M3 to close.

National Highways traffic maps suggest that the incident should clear soon, with normal traffic conditions expected to return at around 2.15pm.
