The UK is on course to have 300,000 public EV chargers by the end of the decade

The majority of Britons are calling for a major overhaul for greater awareness of public electric vehicle chargers to help more motorists make the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles.

According to a new survey, 56 per cent of drivers believe there should be a universal sign along roads to help public EV chargers stand out for zero emission vehicle owners.

Other suggestions include installing totem pole pricing boards to go alongside fuel prices at filling stations (51 per cent) and having chargepoints installed on built-in sat navs for petrol and diesel cars as a subtle tactic (52 per cent).

More than three-quarters of motorists believe the "green P" sign would have the most impact when indicating the location of chargers.

These argue this would have a similar positive impact on motorists by reassuring them that EV charging was nearby, similar to how the "blue P" sign indicates parking opportunities.

Research from the AA states that the Government is on track to reach its target of 300,000 publicly available chargers by the end of the decade.

However, survey respondents suggested that the installation of 380,000 chargers by the same deadline would give people the confidence to switch to an EV.

The latest data from Zapmap shows there are 74,611 public charging devices around the UK, with almost 110,000 connectors available for motorists to use.

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA, said the number of chargers across the country is still a concern for motorists, despite the constantly expanding network.

The AA is now calling on chargepoint operators and the Government to challenge consumer issues around the availability of chargers and give Britons the confidence to make the switch.

Cousens said: "While it’s great to see charging infrastructure installed across the country, there is a danger that many units are hiding in plain sight.

"Often it is small changes that make a big difference, and if a 'green P' will help sign the way, highlight the network and give more confidence to those looking to switch to electric, then it seems a sensible upgrade to make."

The expert noted that more drivers will be encouraged to switch to an electric vehicle if they see a visible charging network in their local areas and on popular motorway routes.

He added: "Charger reliability, speed of charging, cost, accessibility and personal safety are all being weighed up by consumers before making the leap.

"The more Government and chargepoint operators can do to help address these issues, the more EVs we may see on the road."

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has pledged several new measures to make it easier for motorists to make the switch to electric through car tax breaks and a boost to the national charging infrastructure.

The Government has committed £65million towards Connected Kerb to help the company expand the charging network in local areas, especially for people who may not have access to home charging.

Speaking to GB News, a Government spokesperson said: "We're committed to delivering greener transport by supporting the transition to electric vehicles."
