The team broke the Guinness World Record by less than six miles

An electric car has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest journey by an EV on a single charge, with a British team beating the previous record set by a Chinese team.

As part of a project by Webfleet, Bridgestone tyres and the AA, Kevin Booker and Sam Clark, supported by co-pilot Richard Parker, travelled 569.64 miles (916.74km) on a single charge.

The new benchmark was set using a Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, fitted with Bridgestone tyres. This is despite the Mach-E having an official WLTP range of just 373 miles.

The Mach-E Premium Extended Range was selected as the test vehicle for its advanced battery technology and driver comfort, managing to travel an average of 6.25 miles per kilowatt hour.

The drive was completed over 24 hours, included a mix of urban and rural roads and saw Booker, Clarke and Parker travel through Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Cambridgeshire.

Kevin Booker is known as one of Britain's best hypermilers by using little-known techniques to get the best range, performance and efficiency out of any vehicle.

Commenting on the world record achievement, the 46-year-old said: "Breaking this record has been an exhilarating journey and a powerful demonstration of what electric vehicles can achieve.

“It is incredible to see how far we have come with EV technology and efficiency. We hope this inspires more people to consider electric vehicles for their everyday travel.”

He previously achieved another Guinness World Records title in 2023 with the longest distance ever driven in an electric van on a single charge - 311.18 miles (500.8km).

The Ford Mustang Mach-E was also used in another record by Booker when he drove from John O'Groats to Land’s End with the lowest energy consumption driving in an electric car.

Sam Clarke, the chief vehicle officer at GRIDSERVE Sustainable Energy, partnered with Booker on the electric van record and praised Webfleet for supporting the attempts.

He added: "Driving the Ford Mustang Mach-E for such a distance on a single charge was an extraordinary experience."

Bridgestone tyres were highlighted as providing support for the drive, being described as a "critical component" for outstanding mileage and low rolling resistance.

The previous world record was achieved by ZEEKR Autonomous Driving Team in Hangzhou, China, and saw an EV travel 563.97 miles (907.62km) on a single charge.

Webfleet and the AA monitored the tests with independently verified video footage, odometer readings, GPS and battery level data.

Beverley Wise, Webfleet UKI regional director for Bridgestone Mobility Solutions, said: "This record is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in this endeavour.

"It represents a significant milestone in the electrification of road transport and demonstrates the potential of electric vehicles when supported by innovative Bridgestone tyre design and advanced fleet management technology.”

Similarly, Edmund King OBE, President of the AA, applauded the "incredible achievement" with support from its patrols and backup team.

The expert continued: "The drivers, together with Ford Mustang Mach-E, Bridgestone and Webfleet, have all used their expertise to prove that EVs can go much further than people think.

"Such endeavours are important to show that electric vehicles can be a major part of the future transport mix.”
