Digital driving licences are expected to roll out fully in the summer

The DVLA has called on drivers to use a new service which will more easily allow motorists to share information about their driving licences.

In recent years, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has been taking greater steps to make motoring details more accessible for Britons.

This includes the "Driver and vehicles" account, which displays information about driving records, penalty points, MOT reminders and car tax rates.

Posting on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, the DVLA announced that a new feature would be available through the account.

It wrote: "You can now use a QR code to share your driving licence information quickly and easily with third parties such as car hire or insurance companies."

The QR code service works by generating a code that can easily be scanned by a third party to see information from the licence.

This includes driving categories and entitlements, in addition to any restrictions, endorsements or disqualifications they may have.

The DVLA outlines that individual motorists, the police, local authorities, the vehicle hire industry, employers and the central Government use the service.

The agency has called on Britons to set up their Driver and vehicles account "today" to ensure they can access their motoring documents in a convenient place.

To create a Driver and vehicles account, drivers must have a driving licence issued in England, Scotland or Wales, and a V5C logbook in their name.

They will also require either a UK passport or the identity document they use to sign in to a UK Visas and Immigration account (UKVI).

It comes as the Government plans to introduce a new digital driving licence through the GOV.UK Wallet and a new app to simplify access to services and motoring documents.

In January, the Government announced that it would launch the new digital licences later this year as part of a £45billion savings mission to drive growth.

Britons will be able to use the digital licence to prove their age, while the app will give them further options to view their documents.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the digital licence as a "game changer for millions of people".

She added that the new technology would put power back into the hands of drivers by making interactions "faster, easier and more secure".
