Traffic commissioners use a Statutory Document to inform their decisions on how drivers should be regulated on the road.
These decisions have largely remained unchanged for a number of years, although "significant improvements" were made in 2015 and 2019.
The six-week consultation will seek feedback on proposed revisions and invites views on how the profile of traffic commissioners can be raised amongst the drivers they regulate.
Richard Turfitt, the Senior Traffic Commissioner for Great Britain, commented on the launch and intention of the consultation.
He said: "Our mission is to ensure road safety and maintain public confidence in the commercial driving sector.
"This consultation is a vital step in ensuring we are regulating vocational drivers in a way which is effective and proportionate to the risk they pose to other road users.
"We need your input to make sure our guidelines are fair, consistent, and transparent."
The consultation specifically aims to achieve consistent regulatory outcomes for drivers by considering the risk they pose to other road users.
It will also look at the referral for regulatory action against drivers, the delegation of matters to staff acting on behalf of traffic commissioners and the use of case studies.
Turfitt added: "Our decisions impact not only the drivers and operators but also the wider road users. It is, therefore, essential that our approach to considering driver conduct is fair, consistent, and transparent.
"Together, we can continue to uphold the highest standards of road safety and public confidence in our regulatory processes."
The consultation was first launched on Thursday, April 17, 2025, and will conclude on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
