Millions of British drivers issued urgent car insurance warning - 'You need to do your research'

Many will also be looking to bask in the warm weather across the continent on holiday, with new data suggesting that around five million UK motorists will be driving to Europe this year.

Around half of these people will be driving just over the English Channel to stay in France, with motorists looking to relax in the summer months.

Data from Confused.com found that 68 per cent of people will be travelling to their holiday destination by road, with popular tourist spots including Paris and Bordeaux.

Almost one-third of Britons will be travelling to mainland Europe to watch the Euros, while one in five will be watching another sporting event.

Drivers must ensure that they have the correct level of coverage on their policy to allow them to drive in some European countries for up to 30 days.

While it is not strictly required to notify their insurer before heading abroad, 33 per cent of people travelling this year have already done so.

Louise Thomas, motoring expert at Confused.com car insurance, urged motorists to check their car insurance policies before setting off as it may make the journeys easier.

She said: “Given Europe seems just a stone's throw away, it’s not surprising that taking a road trip is becoming a popular choice for those heading on holiday.

"Having your own car gives you more flexibility. You can load up with as much luggage as you like -as long as it doesn’t compromise your driving.

"And, you can even share the load with another driver if they are insured to do so."

Speaking with car insurance providers before setting off can help motorists ensure they have the correct level of cover to protect themselves and other road users.

Many countries will also require motorists to be equipped with a list of key safety items that could keep them safe in the event of an accident.

This normally includes a warning triangle, reflecting or high-vis jackets, headlamp converters, spare bulbs for lights and a first-aid kit.

Thomas added: “If you're planning a European road trip this summer, it might be to explore the French countryside or to see your team at the Euros. You need to do your research before you leave.
