'There’s a clear difference in what flyers are paying for their airport parking across the country'

New research has found which airports offer the best value for drivers looking to park before setting off on holiday as savings of more than £130 can be seen.

London City Airport is the most expensive destination for people looking to park for two weeks at an average of £213.14, making it pricier than 18 other airports across the UK.

Other airports in and around the capital are also expensive, with Gatwick placing in second (£193.14), Luton in sixth (£151.20), Stansted in seventh (£146.71) and Heathrow in ninth (£127.99).

While it may be more convenient to fly from London, drivers parking outside of the capital will pay £123.52, a significant £43 difference.

On the other end of the spectrum, parking is the cheapest at Liverpool John Lennon Airport as drivers can leave their car for two weeks and enjoy their holiday knowing they only need to pay £80.46 on average.

Other cheaper airports include Glasgow where drivers will pay £87.08 for two weeks’ worth of parking, and slightly more at East Midlands (£101.76) and Edinburgh (£104.43).

Drivers can see an enormous difference in price per day depending on where they fly out from. On average, drivers will pay around £5.75 per day for a two-week stay at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, compared to £15.22 per day at London City Airport.

Airport parking has long been an issue for drivers with extortionate prices for short and long-stay parking. Some airports have even hiked costs for drop-off areas even if a car remains there for a few minutes.

Sarah-Jane Outten, savings expert at MyVoucherCodes, said: “There’s a clear difference in what flyers are paying for their airport parking across the country.

“Those in the south are being hit with particularly pricey rates, while travellers departing from Liverpool are enjoying some of the lowest prices available out of the nation’s biggest airports.

“Airport parking can be costly, giving travellers all the more reason to find ways to save where they can. Park & ride and off-airport car parks tend to be the cheapest, so consider booking a space at one of these if you want to cut costs.”

As with most items associated with travelling, experts urge drivers to buy them as soon as they book, including travel insurance, parking and car rental.

Drivers are likely to see huge savings if they book their parking options in advance, although some encourage holidaymakers to pay extra for flexible coverage in case they need to cancel.

Motorists should also consider where the car parking facilities are, not just the price. In almost all scenarios, the cheapest car parks will be further from the airport itself, requiring people to carry their luggage far distances.
