Drivers with some of the most popular and common cars on the road across the UK could see their repair costs spiral this year.
New research has found that the average repair cost for the UK's ten most popular used cars in 2024 increased by a staggering 20 per cent compared to the previous year.
According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the most popular used car sold in 2024 was the iconic Ford Fiesta.
Millions of these are seen on the road every day, but drivers could soon turn their backs on the stalwart if repair costs continue to increase.

In 2023, the average repair cost for a Ford Fiesta was £925, although this has since risen a staggering 25 per cent to £1,159.
The findings of the study revealed that repair costs have increased by one-fifth, on average, whereas owners of some vehicles could see their bills hike by almost 30 per cent.
Vehicle costs around the world have risen in recent years, with some still blaming the pandemic for slowing global manufacturing, while others point to global conflicts as the reason for the high costs and a shortage of parts.
Some industry experts have even warned that drivers could see prices rise even further, given President Donald Trump's new tariffs on cars, steel and other key resources.

WARRANTYWISE
Antony Diggins, Managing Director of Warrantywise, said: "Our latest Reliability Index data from 2024 reveals some key trends for car owners to be aware of.
"With repair costs continuing to rise, it’s something all motorists will need to consider - especially given the wider economic challenges and inflation in the UK.
"Looking at the most popular choice of used car from 2024 to 2025, our reliability data highlights the importance of making informed decisions when buying second-hand."
While the Vauxhall Astra was the seventh most popular used car sold in 2024, the vehicle has seen the highest percentage increase in repair costs.
Between 2023 and 2024, owners of the popular Astra model have seen repair costs jump a concerning 28 per cent from £819 to £1,047.
Warrantywise has issued a warning to motorists, noting that although the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) has fallen from 7.3 per cent in 2023 to 2.5 per cent in December 2024, it appears that it does not take into account repair costs for vehicles.
As a result, motorists with used cars that are outside of warranty could be "worst impacted". Diggins added: "That said, our data offers valuable insights for anyone looking to buy a used car or wanting to understand the potential repair issues with their current vehicle.
"It is also a reminder that cars are complex machines, even the most reliable ones can develop faults – no vehicle is completely immune."
