New car tax changes will be introduced at the start of April

Drivers are being urged to ensure they are familiar with their car tax charges ahead of new costs being introduced in the coming months.

All motorists are required to tax their vehicles to keep them on the road, no matter how old they are, and even if they are not required to pay anything.

To check if a vehicle is taxed, drivers can use the GOV.UK tool to see if has up-to-date tax or has been registered as off the road (Statutory Off Road Notification).

The tool will ask drivers to enter a registration number and confirm the make, model and colour of the car they are searching for.

It will then show when the tax and the MOT of the vehicle expire, in addition to other details including the date of first registration, its CO2 emission rate and the date when the last V5C logbook was issued.

At present, electric cars are not required to pay Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) until April 1, 2025. This was changed in 2022 by former Conservative Chancellor Jeremy Hunt who said the system of tax needed to be fairer for all motorists.

Certain classic cars are also exempt from paying vehicle tax if it was built before January 1, 1984. While owners will not need to pay anything, they must ensure that the vehicle is taxed and road legal.

GB News has compiled a list of all car tax payments required to be road legal depending on when the vehicle was first registered.
