British expats are being urged to make themselves aware of new driving licence changes which could see them benefit from a more convenient way of displaying their documents.
The French Government has introduced new legislation to allow motorists to carry a valid electronic copy of their driving licence and identity card via an official mobile app.
During roadside checks, expats can utilise the app to share licence data securely, allowing police officers to access their details safely and securely.
The France Identite app lets drivers keep their vital documents in one secure location and helps speed up any checks by groups requiring their licence.

The app is currently only valid in France
GETTYThe app has worked for digital copies of the French identity card for almost three years.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said: “This solution will let people keep their identity data safe behind a high level of security.
“The integration of driving licences into the France Identité app is essential to simplify driving habits.”
The authorities have stressed that the app is voluntary and there are no plans to replace physical driving licences or identity cards.
According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics, there are an estimated 150,000 British citizens living in France, as of 2016.
From April, drivers will also see changes to the digitisation of car insurance stickers which are expected to be replaced by an electronic register from April, according to The Connexion.
However, expats must be aware that a digital driving licence is only valid in France, based on current legislation.
Anyone with a DVLA-issued UK driving licence will not be able to import their licence into the app because of its reliance on a “restricted identity statement”.
Any Britons living in France and with a French-issued driving licence will be able to use the app and make use of its features.
A spokesperson for Ibanista commented on the new licence changes, saying: “The advent of the digital driver’s license heralds a new era of convenience and security for road users in France.
“Expats can now navigate the country’s roads with greater ease, knowing that their license is securely stored on their smartphone.
“Embrace this digital evolution and streamline your road use experience in France.”

While travelling in Europe could require some Britons to need an International Driving Permit (IDP), it is not needed when taking to the roads in France.
A new IDP change will be introduced on April 1, when drivers will be able to get the permit from participating PayPoint stores across the UK where they will exclusively be available.
