The police have issued a strong warning to drivers of traffic chaos after a multi-vehicle crash on a major route near Plymouth, forcing a key road to close.

The A38 lane in Plymouth has been closed, with the local police, paramedics and firefighters at the scene.

Traffic on the popular road has stopped because of the crash after the incident took place on the westbound side of the carriageway at A38 The Parkway at around 7.15am.

The event is expected to clear between 11:15am and 11:30am, according to the road traffic organisation.

National Highways South West is keeping drivers updated with the latest developments on X, formerly known as Twitter and other social media sites.

It posted: “1 lane (of 2) is closed on the #A38 westbound in #Devon between the #A386 (#Plymouth) and the #A3064 (#Manadon) due to a collision involving 3 vehicles.

“Emergency services are in attendance. There's a 20 minute delay on approach so allow extra journey time this morning.”

Latest footage from the scene shows police officers standing to the side of the dual carriageway.

Staggered traffic has resumed, although delays are expected to continue as debris is cleared from the road.

Grainy footage from the National Highways cameras shows three vehicles strewn across the road.

Drivers saw other issues on the A38 on Monday evening after an incident saw drivers delayed, although it was after the bulk of rush hour traffic.

The dual carriageway was closed in both directions for over an hour as police attended the scene, according to Plymouth Live.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were notified at around 7.20pm on Monday, March 11, to reports of a concern of welfare of a woman who was on the wrong side of the railings on the flyover over the A38, Plymouth.

“Officers attended the scene and a full road closure was put in place at Marsh Mills roundabout for around an hour.

"Police negotiators were deployed and the woman was talked off of the bridge and left in the hands of healthcare professionals.”
