Carpets must be cleaned regularly to keep the home fresh and clean.

One expert explained the best way to freshen up a carpet and how to get rid of stains.

If the carpet is holding onto odours, baking soda could be the solution.

She said: "Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then vacuum it up.

"Baking soda is a natural deodoriser that can help to remove odours from your carpet."

Bicarbonate of soda starts at just 65p in Tesco and 75p in Asda.

If trying to target stains on a carpet, Ava suggested it is key to act fast.

She continued: "If you spill something on your carpet, clean it up immediately.

"Blot the stain with a clean cloth, and then use a carpet cleaner to remove the stain."

It is important to blot stains and be cautious when using water as it could lead to mould.

"When cleaning your carpet, be careful not to over-wet it," Ava explained.

"Excess moisture can cause mould and mildew to grow."

Even if there are no obvious stains or smells, carpets should be regularly cleaned to keep them looking their best.

The expert stated: "Vacuum your carpet at least once a week to remove dirt and dust. This will help to keep your carpet looking clean and fresh.

"Also, it's important to deep clean your carpet every 6-12 months.
