Shoppers will get extra points when they recycle while purchasing in stores

Boots has expanded its blister pack recycling scheme to more than 800 stores across the UK, following strong customer demand after a successful regional pilot.

The nationwide initiative allows customers to recycle medicine and vitamin blister packaging from any brand, while earning free Boots Advantage Card points for their contributions.

The scheme, which saw 170,000 customers sign up during its London and Southeast pilot, converts waste materials into playground equipment and furniture.

Customers can earn 100 Boots Advantage Card points, worth £1, for every five empty blister packs they recycle when spending £5 or more in-store.

The scheme accepts all types of blister packaging, including those previously used for medications or vitamins, regardless of brand.

Traditional household kerbside collections cannot process these plastic and foil blister packs, making this recycling initiative particularly valuable for environmentally conscious consumers.

Head of ESG at Boots Candice Smith said: "Taking medicines or vitamins in blister pack packaging is an essential part of everyday life for many of us even more so during the winter when it is peak cough cold season.

"We know from our pilot scheme that people want a recycling solution for their empty blister packs, which is why we're now making it available in towns and cities across the country.

"We look forward to seeing the recycled materials take on a new life as playground equipment and furniture."

To participate, customers must first download the Recycle at Boots App and register for the scheme. Users then log their empty blister packs in the app and wait up to 24 hours for validation.

The final step involves bringing the empty packs to a participating Boots store and scanning the QR code on the blister pack deposit box.

Once collected, the materials are sent to MYGroup, who separates the plastic and foil components. The foil can be immediately reused, while the plastic is converted into MYBoard™.

The Recycle at Boots initiative extends beyond blister packs, offering 500 Advantage Card points when customers recycle five health and beauty empties and spend £10 in-store.

The scheme operates through technology partner Metrisk and recycling partner MYGroup. MYBoard™, the material created from recycled plastic, has diverse applications in playground equipment, furniture, and construction materials.

Customers can locate their nearest participating store through the Boots Store Locator.
