A skin care routine with the right ingredients can significantly improve how you age, so it is important to make sure you pick the right products.
An aesthetics expert suggested looking for products with retinol if you are concerned about the youthfulness of your skin.
Harley Street skin expert Nina Prisk said: "Retinol helps to encourage cell turnover as well as boosting collagen. It can be effective in addressing dull skin and discolouration."
If you have not used retinol before, it is important to "start with a low concentration formula and only use it every few days to begin with", the expert advised.

She explained: "It can sometimes cause irritation and dryness if the skin is sensitive. If your skin is more acne-prone, then retinol or salicylic acid are usually most suitable, whereas for dry skin, ceramides are usually best."
Another good ingredient is hyaluronic acid in moisturisers, as it can "retain hydration" and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The expert stated: "Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, so it pulls moisture to itself and helps the skin to retain moisture and avoid dehydration."
A great antioxidant Nina recommended is vitamin C, which she claimed can "fight free radical damage, brightening the skin and stimulating collagen".
Therefore, it is important to look for vitamin C. Indeed, a study published in the National Library of Medicine backed this up. It said: "Skin fibroblasts have an absolute dependence on vitamin C for the synthesis of collagen and for the regulation of the collagen and elastin balance in the dermis."
Investing in these ingredients can only be effective if you are "consistent" with your applications.
The expert detailed: "A skin care routine doesn’t need to be complicated, but it should be something you do every day.
"Consistency in applying your products will lead to visible improvements in your skin over time."

She advised: "What works for one person might not work for you, so work with a professional to find the products and ingredients best suited to your skin type."
Another skin care expert suggested three steps to follow in the evening for the perfect routine.
Skin care expert at sk:n Corine Tracey advised women to "double cleanse" their skin. The first cleanse will help to remove any makeup and product they have on, and the second will help to unclog pores.
