The Great British Pub of the Year has been named as a spot in the north of England

The awards crowned the best pubs in a number of categories.

A pub in Cheshire was crowned the winner of the best overall pub.

The Cholmondeley Arms in Malpas, Cheshire walked away with the main title as well as the prize for the Best Country/Rural pub in the awards that took place last night.

The pub was acquired by owners Tim Bird and Mary Mclaughlin in 2011.

It was formerly a schoolhouse and they refurbed it into the award-winning pub it is today.

Tim said: "After all these years together, it means the world.

"When we opened, I said we can be a beacon of hope for rural pubs but now we can be an ambassador as the pub of the year for Great Britain. For the team, this is just amazing.

"Helen [the pub’s general manager] has worked at the Cholmondeley for 12 years and she is the epitome of what our pubs should be. I am so proud.”

The awards take place each year and will search the country to find the best watering hole.

They are judged on a number of categories and the winner is the pub that offers the best overall experience for the pub.

The Cholmondeley Arms is a hit with visitors and it has an admirable rating of four out of five stars in Tripadvisor.

One reviewer described it as "wonderful" and said: "My wife and I had a lovely experience visiting this pub a few weeks ago, the place has a certain ambience to it that is unmatched.
