Aldi has changed packaging on some of its toothbrushes in a bid to cut back on waste

The budget supermarket chain Aldi has updated the packaging on its everyday own-label toothbrushes to reduce plastic use.

This follows a number of packaging changes the supermarket giant has made to cut its environmental impact.

The plastic and card packaging has been replaced with a cardboard alternative. This is easier for customers to recycle at home as the materials do not need to be separated.

Shoppers will notice the new packaging on Aldi’s two-packs of Dentitex Soft and Whitening toothbrushes and it will help to remove around 17 tonnes of plastic packaging every year.

Plastics and packaging director at Aldi Luke Emery said: “Reducing plastic is a huge priority for us at Aldi, and we know how important it is to our customers too.

“We are continuously looking for innovative ways to modify our packaging, and making this change on our toothbrushes is another step forward in our ongoing work to remove plastic where possible.”

British supermarkets are constantly making changes in stores to reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste on its products.

Aldi recently updated its toilet paper to make every roll go further, reduce plastic waste and cut back on the number of lorries needed to deliver stock.

Select own-brand lines of Aldi's toilet paper now include double the amount of sheets per roll, cutting back on how many toilet roll tubes are needed.

The double toilet rolls have been trialled in stores in West Midlands, East Midlands and Yorkshire and are available in four, six, eight and 12 roll packs.

If this was done in all stores across the UK, the retailer estimated it would remove 60 tonnes of plastic packaging per year, as less plastic is needed for the packs.

Luke Emery added: “At Aldi, we’re working hard to reduce our environmental footprint wherever we can, and we’re always looking for new ways to make a difference.

“Reducing the plastic waste and carbon emissions related to such a widely-used product will have a huge positive impact, and it’s just one example of some exciting changes we have in the pipeline.”

This comes as Aldi launched a brand new energy-saving air fryer, but shoppers must act quickly if they want to get their hands on it. The 7.2L Air Fryer will be available at Aldi within days, from April 14. It will be available as a Specialbuy.

The supermarket said: "With World Earth Day coming up, Aldi has shoppers covered with the launch of their Conscious Kitchen range.

"With 78 per cent of UK adults looking to reduce their carbon footprint, the supermarket is making it easier than ever for customers to make greener choices or find simpler ways to be more eco-friendly in the kitchen.

"Landing in stores from April 14 is the 7.2L Air Fryer (£59.99). The range will be available in the middle aisle from April 14, however budding chefs will have to be quick, as with all Specialbuys once they’re gone, they’re gone."
