The latest innovation in packaging could signifcantly reduce Aldi's carbon footprint

Aldi is launching its own-brand wines packaged in paper bottles in a bid to cut back on its carbon emissions.

The recyclable packaging will be the first sold commercially in-store, marking a first for UK supermarkets.

By replacing their wine packaging, Aldi is hoping to generate a reduction in carbon footprint equivalent to driving around the planet 5.8 times.

The new bottles were introduced in collaboration with Frugalpac and consist of 94 per cent recycled cardboard - making it five times lighter than regular plastic bottles.

The move comes amid nationwide efforts to reduce the impact of materials like plastic on the natural environment.

Overall, the emissions from wine glass bottles remain relatively minor compared to the total scope of global emissions.

Heavier bottles tend to have a more significant environmental impact, however, as do bottles containing smaller amounts of recycled glass.

Aldi’s new packaging for the alcoholic beverage will roll out across the discount supermarket’s Cambalala South African Shiraz and South African Sauvignon Blanc.

The packaging is made from 94 per cent recycled paperboard and lined with a pouch to contain the liquid.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “Shoppers are striving to become more sustainable in their everyday lives, looking for small ways to make a big difference for our planet.

“We are proud to be the first supermarket to launch an own-brand paper bottle.”

Malcolm Waugh, chief executive of Frugalpack, added: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Aldi on this landmark new line.

“Our ambition has always been to allow more people the opportunity to enjoy our paper Frugal Bottles, giving them greener choices.

“Launching in a major UK supermarket means more shoppers can now drink responsibly and sustainably and we are so pleased to be part of this journey.”

The move comes shortly after brands across the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry introduced similar changes.

Absolut Vodka launched a single-mould paper bottle in Tesco last year, marking the first time paper-based bottles have been sold commercially in stores.

Aldi's new packaging will be in stores from March 18th, to coincide with Global Recycling Day.

In February, Aldi announced it also will offer customers the option to use refill stations at select stores within six months following a successful trial.
