Eating more fibre can be beneficial for your health

Diet plays a crucial role in managing blood sugar levels, according to leading dietitians who have shared their expert recommendations.

Two registered dietitians have highlighted the importance of high-fibre foods, particularly non-starchy vegetables, in helping to reduce glucose levels in the blood.

Their guidance focuses on specific food choices that can make a significant impact on blood sugar management through everyday dietary changes.

These recommendations emphasise the role of fibre-rich foods in controlling blood sugar levels naturally through careful food selection.

Registered dietitian Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD, spoke to GB News about the importance of eating non-starchy vegetables as part of your daily meals.

The expert continued: "Integrating non-starchy vegetables into your regular diet daily is one way to lower your blood sugar. They are low in carbohydrates, high in fibre and nutrient-dense making them a great alternative to starchy foods that impact blood sugar negatively."

She specifically recommended vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, kale, carrots and courgette. These vegetables provide essential fibre that helps regulate blood sugar levels effectively.

Trista added: "The fibre they provide slows digestion and ultimately the absorption of glucose, which prevents blood sugar spikes after eating."

This slowing effect of fibre is key to maintaining stable blood sugar levels throughout the day.

The process works by creating a more gradual absorption of nutrients, helping to avoid sudden increases in blood glucose.

Non-starchy vegetables are particularly effective because they combine high fibre content with low carbohydrates. This combination makes them an ideal choice for those looking to manage their blood sugar through dietary changes.

Registered dietitian at Ahara Jordan Anthony also emphasised the central role of any high-fibre foods in blood sugar management.

"If there's one nutrient to focus on when it comes to managing blood sugar levels, it's fibre," Jordan explained.

She highlighted fibre's unique ability to regulate nutrient absorption, adding: "The great thing about fibre is that, when you eat it with other foods, it slows and regulates the absorption of those foods into your body.

"This will help to keep your blood sugar lower, even when you eat something sugary, and also leave you feeling fuller for longer." These effects make fibre-rich foods particularly valuable for blood sugar control.
