Experts recommend that women include more protein in their diets to help with menopause
During perimenopause, women face significant changes to their bodies as oestrogen levels decline, which can lead to a decrease in muscle mass and bone health.
The decline in oestrogen levels during this period affects the body making it crucial for women to pay attention to their nutritional intake.
According to nutritionist Natalie Rouse, protein plays a vital role in women's diets as it possesses several health benefits such as helping bone health and anti-ageing.
The challenge of maintaining muscle mass becomes particularly pronounced during menopause, as dropping hormone levels accelerate muscle loss.
Natalie advises women to implement a high-protein diet because of the benefits it can provide to help with menopausal symptoms.
She explained: "Keeping active alongside a high-protein diet can help preserve muscle tissue and prevent sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle. In fact, women lose about one per cent of muscle mass per year after the age of 30."
The expert recommended that women start including dairy items in their diets which are high in protein such as cow's milk or eggs.
She also advised to include lean meats in women's daily meals, incorporated with some physical ideas such as lifting some weights.
Protein can help stabilise blood sugar fluctuations too, by "slowing down digestion and preventing sharp spikes and crashes in glucose levels," the expert explained.
It helps with women's energy levels making them feel more energised plus it reduces the cravings for snacks.
The expert added that protein can also help people age better as it helps to repair the body through the amino acids that are found in the source of food.
She said: "As women age, protein becomes even more essential for supporting overall health, including immune function, tissue repair and skin health."
