The 46th President's diagnosis comes amid a flurry of concerns about his fitness for office ahead of November

President Joe Biden's Covid symptoms have been revealed by his top doctor.

It comes after the 81-year-old Democrat tested positive for COVID-19 while travelling on Wednesday in Las Vegas.

He was forced to pull out of a planned speech and self-isolate after experiencing “mild symptoms” from the infection, the White House said.

His physician has now shed further light on the 46th President's symptoms, which include "general malaise".

Doctor Kevin O’Connor, Biden's doctor, said in a note that the 81-year-old “presented this afternoon with upper respiratory symptoms, to include rhinorrhea (runny nose) and non-productive cough, with general malaise”.

After the positive COVID-19 test, Biden was prescribed the antiviral drug Paxlovid and has taken his first dose, O’Connor said.

Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden will fly to his home in Delaware, where he will "self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time".

Biden last tested positive for COVID-19 twice in the summer of 2022 but concerns over his health have intensified since then.

Following a disastrous debate with Donald Trump and a gaffe-ridden speech at the Nato summit last week, Biden is facing growing calls from senior Democrats to bow out of the 2024 race for the White House.

Adam Schiff, the influential representative from California, has joined a growing list of critics within his party urging Biden to step aside and let another candidate run as the Democratic Party's nominee.

Biden has doubled down in the face of these calls but they are getting louder.

Trump's attempted assassination muted the rebellion but a new poll has dealt a fresh blow to his re-election prospects.

A new survey by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research has found that only about three in 10 Democrats are extremely or very confident that he has the mental capability to serve effectively in the Oval Office.

The poll was conducted mostly before Saturday’s assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

It’s unclear whether the shooting influenced people’s views of Biden, but the small number of poll interviews completed after the shooting provided no early indication that his prospects improved.

Overall, seven in 10 Americans think Biden should drop out, with Democrats only slightly less likely than Republicans and independents to say that he should make way for a new nominee.
