Having probiotics, prebiotics and limiting the amount of processed foods are all recommended to help your gut

There are many different approaches individuals can take when wanting to add years to their lives, ranging from exercising more to taking supplements but one of the most important things people need to focus on is gut health.

This is according to pharmacist, Sonia Khan, who spoke exclusively to GB News on what she believes is the pillar of longevity.

The pharmacist said: "The gut microbiome is increasingly recognised as a root cause or contributor to many chronic conditions that can impact healthy ageing.

"When the balance of beneficial and harmful bacteria in the gut is disrupted, known as dysbiosis, it can trigger systemic inflammation, impair immunity, and disrupt metabolic and cognitive functions."

The expert said that poor gut health could increase the risk of cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's.

She said: "Chronic gut inflammation and altered gut-brain signalling are linked to increased amyloid-beta plaques in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s. Gut dysbiosis can exacerbate inflammation and affect the production of key neurotransmitters like dopamine, contributing to disease progression."

As poor gut health can increase the risk of several dangerous diseases and conditions, Sonia emphasised the importance of looking after your gut health.

"Maintaining gut health is a proactive step in slowing the ageing process and promoting long-term wellbeing. By nurturing the gut microbiome, individuals can enhance their overall vitality and quality of life," explained the expert.

She provided six pieces of advice, focusing on two main foods for people to incorporate into their lives to improve their gut health and help them live longer.

A diverse diet can help individuals with the pharmacist drawing close attention to foods rich in fibre.

She said: "Consume a wide range of foods rich in fibre to feed the beneficial bacteria in our gut. Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Fermented foods too like yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi for probiotics, and foods like garlic, onions, and bananas for prebiotics to nourish gut bacteria."

The expert advised longevity seekers to limit the amount of processed food they eat as it can disrupt gut balance and promote harmful bacteria.

People should aim to keep hydrated throughout the day, making sure they have enough water as it helps to maintain the gut lining and digestion.

Sonia added: "Try to reduce stress. Chronic stress negatively impacts the gut microbiome, so practices like mindfulness, yoga, or meditation are beneficial.

"Try to do some physical activity too as it helps support a diverse and healthy gut microbiome."

If you have any concerns regarding your longevity or any other health matters, it is always best to consult your GP.
