Britons are advised to be physically active every day, even if it is just light movement

While some factors that influence lifespan are out of our control, such as age, gender and ethnicity, there are certain lifestyle choices everyone can make to boost longevity.

A doctor shared her top tips for "living longer", stressing the importance of keeping active and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle.

Dr Jen Caudle (known as @drjencaudle on TikTok) took to the platform with some sage longevity advice.

She said: "Make sure you are moving. You've got to keep moving - that is exercise. Being sedentary is no good for your mind, your body and your longevity."

Indeed, another doctor warned that maintaining your movement can "save your life", naming the two essential skills to develop now for longevity.

Dr Dustin Portela said on TikTok: "You need to develop strength in your hips and you need a little bit of foot speed."

He emphasised the importance of being able to "get your feet back in front of you" if you fall. One way to do this is by "practising getting off the floor with only one point of support".

A third doctor named the exercise that is "the best thing for your heart" and "strengthens bones".

But exercising for a longer life does not have to mean spending hours running or in the gym. Walking is hailed not only as an effective weight loss strategy but as a longevity booster too.

The NHS provides useful information on physical activity guidelines for older adults. This includes guidance on what counts as light activity, moderate-intensity activity and vigorous-intensity activity, and which activities strengthen muscles.

Exercise goals for over-65s

  • Be physically active every day, even if it is just light movement
  • Enjoy activities that improve strength, balance and flexibility at least two days per week
  • Do a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity if you are already active - or a combination of both
  • Limit the time you spend sitting or lying down, breaking up long periods of inactivity with some movement

The NHS provided a warning to mature adults: "Speak to a GP first if you have not exercised for some time, or if you have medical conditions or concerns. Make sure your activity and its intensity are appropriate for your fitness."

As well as maintaining an active lifestyle as you get older, Dr Caudle advised adopting six other longevity-focused lifestyle habits.
