Dr Mason said: "CVD is one of the main causes of death in the UK so reducing the risk of CVD may potentially increase life expectancy and help people live longer.

"In research studies, drinking green tea has been linked with reduced risk of death from all causes and CVD.

"Further research involving 100,902 adults found that people who normally drink tea had 1.26 years longer life (at the age of 50) compared with those who do not drink tea."

Green tea has many health benefits but Britons don't need to pour out their favourite black teas.

The expert, from the Tea Advisory Panel, shared drinking black tea can also reduce the risk of death.

She continued: "Most of the tea drunk in Britain is black tea and a large UK study has recently shown that black tea specifically reduces risk of death.

"These findings come from the UK Biobank study that included 498,043 men and women aged 40-69 years with follow-up lasting for an average of 11.2 years showing that drinking two or more cups of tea a day (which was mostly black tea as this was a UK population) reduced death from CVD compared to no cups of tea.

"The risk of death in this study was reduced by nine to 13 per cent.

"A US study involving 15,486 women and men who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes found that higher intake of tea compared with low intake was associated with a 21 per cent reduced risk of death from all causes."

Flavonoids are the main ingredient present in lots of types of tea that can improve longevity, the nutritionist continued.

Dr Mason concluded: "Overall these large studies show that tea drinking reduces risk of death.

"Flavonoids are the main ingredients that make a tea a healthy drink. This includes black tea, green tea and herbal infusions.

"Flavonoids help control the damaging inflammatory effects of free radicals in the body and help to maintain health and may help you live longer.”
