While statins are the cornerstone of cholesterol treatment, lifestyle changes can be as effective or even more powerful than the drug for managing lipid levels.
A heart-healthy diet incorporating fibre and healthy fats whilst reducing saturated fat intake can dramatically improve lipid profiles, explained GP and physician, Dr Olalekan Otulana.
These dietary changes form the foundation of non-pharmaceutical cholesterol management but work best when combined with exercise.
The expert also pointed out that when it comes to cholesterol, aerobic activities are particularly beneficial.

He told GB News: "Lifestyle changes can be as effective, or even more so, than statins when it comes to lowering cholesterol."
Like many health professionals, Dr Otulana recommends prioritising these lifestyle changes alongside medication when needed for optimal heart health.
"Lifestyle interventions provide broader cardiovascular benefits and should therefore be prioritised alongside," advised Dr Otulana.
These exercises help raise HDL (the 'good' cholesterol) while lowering LDL (the 'bad' cholesterol).

But beyond diet and exercise, natural compounds offer additional options for cholesterol management.
Bergamot extract, for example, works through various mechanisms, but doubts remain over its long-term safety, cautioned Dr Otulana.
"Bergamot works through various mechanisms, and red yeast rice contains natural statins, though long-term safety is not as well-established," said the GP. "Side effects can be similar to those of prescription statins."
While statins may be vital for some patients, lifestyle interventions like diet and exercise provide broader cardiovascular benefits including improved blood pressure and reduced inflammation.
