An expert has shared five ingredients to include in your diet for a better blood glucose reading
Managing blood sugar levels is often associated with diabetes, but it also plays a key role in controlling other health factors, such as weight gain.
However, with sugar now so widespread in food, avoiding drastic blood sugar spikes has become a real challenge.
Dietitian Dr Charmaine Dominguez has built a large following by sharing practical tips to lower blood glucose levels. In a recent clip, she listed vinegar, ginger, okra, beans and barley as top ingredients for blood sugar control.
Vinegar was the first recommendation named for immediate blood sugar control.
"Adding vinegar to your starch can help you lower your post-meal blood sugar," she explained. "[This] first food will help patients lower their blood sugar acutely."
The second ingredient on the dietitian's list for blood sugar control is ginger, with the expert noting that if you "don't like eating ginger you can also try making ginger tea".
For longer-term blood sugar management, Dr Dominguez emphasised the importance of soluble fibre.
"The reason why we want soluble fibre is that we do not just want to lower your blood sugar at the moment but also tackle the root cause of insulin resistance," she explained.
This approach helps the body become more efficient at processing glucose naturally.
Beans are another nutrient powerhouse for blood sugar control, according to Dr Dominguez.
"Beans are an amazing source of soluble fibre, and they also have protein which can also help stabilise blood sugar," she said.
Barley is another top option because it contains beneficial beta-glucan "which can help lower cholesterol and your post-meal blood sugar", according to Dr Dominguez. The next dietary addition is Okra.

The revelation comes soon after the LA-based dietitian revealed how specific types of tea could help people manage their blood sugar levels.
Green tea was the top recommendation because of its proven ability to reduce blood sugar levels.
"It is famous for lowering your blood sugar and it has been shown in many studies that it can also lower your post-meal blood sugar," shared Dr Dominguez.
She specifically recommended Matcha varieties due to their higher concentration and antioxidant content.
