Hot drinks can stop your supplements from getting to work

Supplements are great for improving your health and helping to fight various diseases and ailments.

However, you could be hindering the effectiveness of these with your morning coffee.

Waiting at least 30 minutes after taking supplements before making a brew is ideal, according to wellness expert and owner of Miracle Leaf Wellness, Agnieszka Kozlowska.

This is particularly important when taking iron and vitamins B, C and D to improve your health.

Iron

Agnieszka said: "Taking iron with tea or coffee can reduce their effectiveness, as drinks like these can block your body from fully absorbing certain nutrients, especially iron.

"Avoid tea or coffee for a couple of hours before and after taking them and for better absorption, take iron with a glass of orange juice, as vitamin C helps your body process it more effectively."

Vitamin D

When consuming vitamin D, the expert said: "Caffeine can reduce your body's ability to absorb and utilise vitamin D effectively, as caffeine interferes with the receptors that help your body use vitamin D.

“Since vitamin D is important for strong bones, a healthy immune system, and good sleep, it's important to wait at least 30 minutes before or after your coffee to take your vitamin D supplement."

Vitamin B and C

The health pro added: "Vitamins like B vitamins and vitamin C can be affected by caffeine. Because caffeine increases urination, it can flush these nutrients out before your body absorbs them. Adjusting the timing of your supplements can improve their effectiveness."

Indeed, A study titled "The Effect of Coffee on Pharmacokinetic Properties of Drugs: A Review" discusses how coffee impacts the absorption of various supplements and medications.

Supplements in hand

Supplements can be used to improve health, but they are not always effective when taking with coffee

GETTY

It suggested consuming coffee at the same time as the supplements could lead to reduced bioavailability.

So, what can you do instead? Wait 30 minutes after taking your supplements before you make a hot drink to ensure you are getting all the health benefits. Even decaf coffee can affect absorption so steer clear of this too.

Agnieszka said: "To maximise the benefits of these supplements, take them with plain water. Leaving a 30-minute gap before or after your morning coffee ensures your body absorbs the nutrients properly."
