Supplements are marketed for myriad health conditions, with their hidden risks often slipping under the radar.
However, this remains an important consideration for individuals managing ailments like high blood pressure and heart conditions.
Hospitalist Dr Gail Clifford, MD, told GB News that supplements like liquorice root can cause the body to retain sodium, while others like ginseng can act as stimulants.
“If you have high blood pressure, some over-the-counter supplements - especially those labelled as ‘natural’ can work against you,” she warned.
Certain supplements can cause issues when combined with other ingredients
GETTY“A big one to avoid is liquorice root, particularly in its natural form.
“It can cause your body to hold onto sodium and lose potassium, raising blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart rhythm problems.”
Other problematic supplements include those marketed as aphrodisiacs, such as yohimbe, according to Dr Clifford.
She explained: “[A] supplement to be cautious with is yohimbe, often found in products marketed for weight loss or sexual performance.
“Yohimbe can raise both your heart rate and blood pressure and may even cause anxiety or heart palpitations.”
Harvard Health states that the ingredient is found in more than 550 supplements in the United States. But despite widespread use across the Atlantic, the supplement is banned in the UK.
The Supplement Factory notes that the supplement's link to a range of health risks led to regulators taking action.
Dr Clifford warned that certain supplements can cause issues when combined with other ingredients.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
Certain types of supplements act as stimulants
GETTY“Ginseng is a little more nuanced, while it may have some health benefits, high doses or certain types can act as stimulants and potentially raise blood pressure, especially when combined with other ingredients like caffeine.”
To avoid complications, it's important to consult a healthcare professional before taking supplements.
This is particularly important for individuals with elevated blood pressure or taking high blood pressure medication.
Supplements can interact with medications and may not to suitable for everyone, according to the British Dietetic Association.
