Athletes can also develop the condition after years of exposing their joints to stress. An expert has spoken to GB News about their top solutions.

“Certain ingredients available in every household are essentially anti-inflammatory in nature," Lalitha explained. “Turmeric contains curcumin; experiments have shown curcumin can reduce inflammation.
"Ginger is another very usable option; it is quite effective for diminishing pain and swelling.
“Other helpful components include garlic, olive oil, and green tree. All these can reduce the signs of arthritis and even lead to overall health.”
She also highlighted the benefits of garlic, olive oil, and green tea in reducing arthritis symptoms and promoting overall health.
For long-term management of the condition, the expert noted that these dietary changes would work best combined with exercise.
“Gentle exercises like walking, swimming or cycling are good at increasing mobility without putting a lot of stress on the joints,” Lalitha noted.
“Stretching exercises include neck rolls, shoulder shrugs and gentle leg stretches that help maintain flexibility.
“Equally good options are yoga and tai chi, both allowing the benefits of gentle movement and relaxation, which enhance balance and coordination.”

Additional treatments for natural relief
Beyond exercise, Lalitha outlined several natural topical treatments for pain management, noting that even essential oils work when diluted.
“Topical analgesics usually contain capsaicin or menthol, which can offer natural relief,” noted Lalitha.
“These, on application, have an immediate beginning of action upon application. Lavender or eucalyptus essential oil, in dilution, with some carrier oil used for massage, reduces the pain.
Epsom salt baths could offer additional relief, with Lalitha stating that "magnesium relaxes the tensed muscles and hence helps overcome pain".
