Jillian Shriner was involved in the altercation on Tuesday evening

The wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner has been shot by police and subsequently booked for attempted murder following an incident in Los Angeles.

Jillian Shriner, also known as Jillian Lauren, was involved in a confrontation with officers on Tuesday afternoon in the Eagle Rock neighbourhood.

The 51-year-old author sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the altercation, which occurred whilst police were pursuing suspects from an unrelated hit-and-run incident.

According to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department, Shriner was armed with a handgun during the encounter.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The incident took place just days before Weezer is scheduled to perform at the Coachella music festival this weekend.

Officers were responding to a request for backup from the California Highway Patrol at approximately 3:25pm when the shooting occurred.

Three suspects had fled from a hit-and-run on the 134 Freeway, running into the residential area.

As police searched for the suspects, they observed Shriner in the yard of a neighbouring residence armed with a handgun.

According to the LAPD, officers ordered her "numerous times" to drop the weapon, but she refused.

Police claim Shriner then pointed the handgun at the officers, prompting them to open fire. She was struck in the shoulder, according to reports, before retreating into her home.

30 minutes later, Shriner and her babysitter emerged from the house with their hands up and surrendered to police.

A nine-millimetre handgun was later recovered from the residence. Shriner was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

Police later determined she was not involved in the initial hit-and-run incident.

Despite this, she was absentee booked for attempted murder with bail set at $1 million, according to arrest records.

One of the male suspects connected to the hit-and-run was detained by California Highway Patrol, whilst the other two remain at large.

According to reporting from CBS News, Shriner had opened fire after seeing one of the suspects on her property.

The suspect had reportedly attempted to blend in with locals by removing some of his clothing.

The LAPD's Force Investigation Division is currently investigating the incident. No officers or members of the public were injured during the exchange.

Shriner is a bestselling author who has published several notable works under the name Jillian Lauren.

Her 2010 memoir, Some Girls: My Life in a Harem, recounted her experiences with Prince Jefri Bolkiah, brother of the Sultan of Brunei, between 1992 and 1995.

She followed this with a novel titled Pretty in 2011 and a second memoir, Everything You Ever Wanted, in 2015.

More recently, she published the true crime book Behold the Monster: Facing America's Most Prolific Serial Killer, based on her interviews with serial killer Samuel Little.

Shriner and her husband Scott have been married since November 2005.

The couple have two sons, Tariku and Jovanni, whom they adopted from Ethiopia in 2007 and 2009, respectively.

They also have two dogs, Peanut and Calvin, who have appeared in Peta promotions.

Scott Shriner has been a member of Weezer since 2001 and is the band's longest-serving bass player.

The rock band, which also consists of Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson and Brian Bell, was recently announced as a surprise late addition to the Coachella festival lineup.

Weezer is scheduled to perform at the Mojave tent this Saturday, April 12.

It remains unclear whether the incident involving Shriner's wife will affect the band's appearance at the festival.

The group is also set to perform at several other festivals in the coming months, including Kilby Block Party, Soundside, and When We Were Young.

Weezer recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album, known as The Blue Album.
