Lady Colin Campbell said Coogan is an 'idiot and a joke'

Lady Colin Campbell has slammed British actor Steve Coogan, after he mocked fans of the royal family, branding them "flag-waving idiots".

Coogan, 58, appeared on food and comedy podcast 'Off Menu', where he revealed his true opinion on the British monarchy.

Speaking to hosts Ed Gamble and James Acaster, he claimed the royals have "got their foot on the throat" of the working class people.

Coogan added that the late Queen Elizabeth II "worked very hard", but he is "an anti-monarchist".

He continued: "Most of the people that are into it all, those flag-waving plastic boats of people, I think are kind of idiots, because they support a power structure that keeps the foot on the throat of working class people, and I’m just not very keen on that kind of thing."

"The Queen worked very hard. So she was alright, but the rest of them are problematic for me."

Speaking to Patrick Christys on GB News Tonight, royal author and commentator Lady Colin Campbell and royal commentator Phil Dampier reacted to the comments from Coogan.

When asked by Patrick if this was his "Alan Partridge moment", Lady C said Coogan was an "idiot and a joke".

Campbell fumed: "He must have been looking in the mirror. Does he not realise how totally offensive he is? And what's this rubbish about him taking up for the working classes?

"Most of the working classes are in favour of the monarchy. So is he taking up for the working classes at the very moment he calls them idiots? I mean, the man is a joke."

Dampier then defended Coogan, admitting he is a "fan of his work", but said "he does come up with some very strange things."

Dampier continued: "As Lady C says, to brand 35, 40 million people idiots is absolutely ridiculous. It's not a class issue at all. All the polls show that people across all classes support the monarchy, although I'm sure there are plenty of people out there want to get rid of that.

"The thing that surprises me is he didn't have a good word to say about King Charles. I would have thought some of the things that King Charles said would be right up Coogan's street, but apparently the only thing he likes about him is the Duchy Original orange juice. So I'm not quite sure how that works!"

Patrick Christys shared his thoughts on Coogan, stating: "Standing up for the working classes, right? This guy's owned a fleet of Ferrari's in his time.

"I think it's widely perceived he's enjoyed the company of some rather elegant ladies and shops at Waitrose, right.

"I mean, forgive me, but he's not your normal bloke who throws darts down the pub, is he? I mean, come on!"
