The streaming firm recently axed Meghan Markle's podcast after just one series

Spotify has agreed a deal with a comedian accused of calling Britain racist in a bid to reboot its podcast programming following a split with the Sussexes.

Trevor Noah is set to host a new weekly podcast later this year, interviewing famous and influential personalities from around the world.

Noah - who is best known for his former role as host of US late night talk programme The Daily Show - has hosted the Grammy Awards for the last three years and is also the author of a New York Times best-selling book.

The South African comedian sparked uproar last year following a skit where he claimed there had been a racist “backlash” when Rishi Sunak was appointed as prime minister.

The comments were condemned in Britain with former Chancellor Sajid Javid saying Noah had been “simply wrong”.

Piers Morgan also criticised the claims and branded The Daily Show “race-baiting twerps”.

The comedian has since defended his comments and insists he did not call all Britons racists but only “some people”.

The Archetypes podcast featured interviews with high-profile stars including Serena Williams and Mariah Carey.

On Friday, a joint statement from Spotifty and Archewell, the royal couple’s production business, said the two sides had “mutually agreed to part ways”.

However, Bill Simmons, Head of Podcast Innovation and Monetisation at Spotify, criticised the couple in an episode of his own podcast on Friday.

"The f***ing grifters. That's the podcast we should have launched with them," he said.

"I've got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It's one of my best stories."

The deal with Noah is the streaming service’s first since it emerged that the Sussex contract had ended.

Spotify has spent more than $1bn in a bid to push into podcasts but has been forced to scale back its efforts in recent months as it continues to rack up huge losses.
