The Smiths split in 1987 as Morrissey and Johnny Marr pursued successful solo careers

The Smiths’ iconic guitarist Johnny Marr has dismissed an Oasis-style reunion by taking a swipe at Nigel Farage.

Marr, 60, swatted away a fan’s request for The Smiths to follow in the footsteps of Noel and Liam Gallagher following heated political exchanges with former frontman Morrissey.

The fellow Manchester band, known for hits such as This Charming Man and Cemetry Gates, split in 1987.

Heaven knows fans will be miserable now as the light appears to have finally gone out on any prospect of a The Smiths reunion.

A deeper rift emerged between Morrissey and Marr, who both went on to have successful solo careers, over their vastly different political opinions.

The Brexit referendum appeared to add further distance between the pair less than a decade after speculation of a reunion ran rampant.

Morrissey threw his weight behind leading figures in the Brexit campaign, later claiming Farage would “make a good Prime Minister” as he argued “there is absolutely nothing attractive about the EU”.

Marr has long used the Clacton MP as shorthand for his opinion of Morrissey, expressing his belief that the singer aligning with Farage was one of the reasons The Smiths would not reform.

Responding to a fan’s request for a reunion on social media, Marr simply shared a photo of Farage grinning while clutching a pint.

Marr also jokingly dismissed speculation of a reunion in 2019 by arguing it would need “Nigel Farage on guitar”.

Both men’s big mouths seemed to strike again as the spat continued last year when Morrissey sent an open letter to his former bandmate.

There was little chance of heading back to the old house after the 65-year-old accused Marr of using his name as “clickbait”.

He added: “You don’t know me. You know nothing of my life, my intentions, my thoughts, my feelings.”

Marr would later claim Morrissey was just looking for “attention”.

The 60-year-old is also not shy from getting stuck into political discussions.

Marr took to social media to “forbid” David Cameron from liking The Smiths after the ex-Prime Minister revealed he was a fan of the band.

He also recently asked Donald Trump to please, please, please stop playing The Smiths after the ex-President used the hit 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ at a rally in South Dakota in January.

However, the latest calls for a reunion came after Britpop band Oasis announced it was returning in 2025 more than 15 years after splitting up in 2009.

Tickets for the UK dates will go on sale at 9am on August 31, with the tour kicking off at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in July 2025.
