Gambon's widow and son have said their "beloved husband and father" died peacefully with his family by his side following a battle with pneumonia.
Gambon was best known in recent years for portraying Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movie franchise.
His credits also The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Maigret and Sleepy Hollow among dozens of other big and small screen projects.
Throughout his decorated career, Gambon won three Olivier Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four BAFTA Awards.
He also bagged two Emmy nominations for his roles in Emma, and Path to War.

Tributes have flooded in from fans across the globe, including one Twitter user who penned: "Such sad news. Rest In Peace, Michael Gambon," followed by a love heart emoji.
A second shared a clip of Gambon in Harry Potter alongside the tweet: "Rest in peace, Sir Michael Gambon."
Jeremy Clarkson also shared his condolences as he wrote: "I’m so sad to hear that Michael Gambon has died.
