Ralph Fiennes has suffered a major setback ahead of this weekend’s Bafta awards where he is nominated for Best Actor.
The 62-year-old starred in director Edward Berger’s Papal Thriller conclave, which received rave reviews and 12 Bafta nominations.
The film, which sees Fiennes star as a cardinal tasked with managing the Machiavellian scheming and drama of electing a new pope.
Conclave’s huge 12 nominations tally includes nods for Best Film, Best British Film, Best Direction, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini.
Fiennes is hoping to collect his second Bafta, after winning Best Actor in Supporting Role for Schindler's List in 1993.
Close behind Conclave in the nominations tally is the celebrated historical epic The Brutalist, with nine, and recently divisive trans drama Emilia Pérez, with 11.

Despite topping the nominations table, new data suggests Conclave is set to fall short of itsmain rival in The Brutalist.
“The odds across all the markets for the BAFTAs this weekend indicate that The Brutalist is set to take home more awards than any other nominated film,” Betfred’s Robert Ford declared.
Ford expects The Brutalist to sweep much of this weekend’s major awards including Best Film (6/4) and Best Director (1/2).
In a double blow for Fiennes, the 62-year-old is edged to lose out on Best Actor to The Brutalist star, Adrian Brody, who has 10/11 odds or a 52.4 percent chance to take home the award.

Isabella Rossellini is also predicted to lose out but to Emilia Perez’s Zoe Saldana who holds 1/5 odds of glory.
While Fiennes and Rossellini expected to come away empty handed, Conclave is still on track to be victorious in several key categories.
Berger’s Vatican thriller is odds on to win Best Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting and Best Editing.
This weekends awards will tee up a final showdown between Conclave and The Brutalist at the Oscars later this month.
Fiennes and Brody will once again duel for the Best Actor with A Complete Unknown's Timothee Chalamet also expected to mount a challenge with his Bob Dylan biopic.
Elsewhere, Emilia Perez's awards campaign has taken a major dent after its transgender star has faced backlash after the discovery of several historic offensive tweets.
