The former GMB host will appear on the show on Monday morning

Piers Morgan has announced a surprise return to ITV’s Good Morning Britain four years after he stormed off the show while live on-air amid a row over his comments on Meghan Markle.

In a major win for free speech, Morgan, 55, will return to the set where he famously walked off following criticism from co-presenter Alex Beresford.

Just one day prior to his departure from the role, the outspoken presenter came under fire for his staunch defence of the Royal Family following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021.

Broadcasting regulator Ofcom received 41,000 complaints in response to the presenter’s comments on the royal couple, where he claimed he “didn’t believe [Meghan]” when she opened up about her struggles with mental health.

Announcing the move on X, Morgan shared a screenshot of the exact moment he stormed off the ITV show.

He wrote: “BREAKING: It’s been nearly four years (1,453 days to be precise!) since I departed ⁦GMB⁩ rather hastily… but tomorrow morning, for the first time, I’m going back.

“I’ll be on with ⁦Susanna Reid and Ed Balls⁩ at 8.15am.”

In the seconds before the incident in 2021, Beresford tried to cancel Morgan over his views on the Duchess of Sussex.

Referencing Morgan’s claims he was “dropped” by the duchess when she started dating Prince Harry, Beresford said: “I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle, you’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme, and I understand you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off.

“She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has but yet you continue to trash her …”

The former TalkTV host then stormed out of the studio, saying: “OK, I’m done with this, sorry, no, can’t do this.”

Immediately following his exit, Beresford branded Morgan’s behaviour “pathetic” and “diabolical”.

He added: “I’m sorry but Piers spouts off on a regular basis and we all have to sit there and listen, 6.30 to seven o’clock yesterday was incredibly hard to watch, incredibly hard to watch. This is, you know, he has the ability to come in here and talk from a position where he doesn’t fully understand.”

Morgan later returned to the set, where he defended his views on mental health.

However, in a statement following the show, ITV announced he would not return to the show.

A spokesman said: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

In response to Morgan's post, fans of the presenter wrote of their excitement.

One wrote: “I love reunions.”

Another said: “TV gold” accompanied by five gold stars.

And a third wrote: “Good luck, Piers!”

However, not everyone appeared excited by Morgan’s return, with one user writing: “Going back to do what? Though you said the channel is part of the woke MSM so you won’t be a part ever again?”

Another sarcastically wrote: “Ah, fantastic. Piers back on GMB after 1,453 days - because clearly Britain hasn’t been punished enough this week.”
