The singer apologised to fans as she cancelled her Southampton gig

Paloma Faith has cancelled her Southampton gig just hours before she was due to perform and mere days before her scheduled Glastonbury appearance.

The 42-year-old singer pulled out of Friday's show due to "exhaustion" and "illness," but the update has cast doubt on her Glastonbury performance.

Faith took to social media to announce the news, writing: "I'm incredibly upset and disappointed to announce that I need to cancel my show tonight in Southampton.

"After suffering from exhaustion and catching various illnesses from my kids my voice has been severely affected and my range is compromised.

"I have sought advice from medical professionals, they have advised that I need to rest my voice and that means I've had to cancel tonight's show."

She concluded: "I'm so sorry to everyone who bought tickets, I've loved being on the road and seeing all your gorgeous faces and I'm gutted I won't be dancing with you tonight. There will be other opportunities in the future, I'm sure."

The Only Love Can Hurt Like This singer is set to perform at Glastonbury on Sunday, marking her first appearance at the festival in eight years.

She recently told The Sun: "I feel so excited. I am almost going to combust.

"It is one of the absolute best memories of my career, playing at Glastonbury. I'm over-the-moon excited for it."

However, she sparked a strong backlash recently with comments she made about the festival's line-up.

Chatting about the festival's attempts to diversify, she remarked: "What tends to happen is they’ll diversify and include non-white races and women again, and everyone says, ‘Isn’t it great? We’re progressing’ – and then it goes back to white men again for years."

Speaking to Radio Times, she went on: "I'll believe it when I see it."

However, she continued by telling the publication: "I'm there to watch as many women artists as I can.

"I really want to support other women. Everyone they've got is amazing. This industry tends to be a bit sexist and overlook women of my age.

"I felt that there was no way in hell that I would be acknowledged as a worthy person because I’m 42."

Faith was also recently criticised after an appearance on Saturday Kitchen.

Earlier in the month, Faith was promoting her book MILF, a project she described as "an open and honest expression of what I feel is needed in culture and society".

She went on: "It's an open honest expression of what I feel is needed in culture and society because when I first got to an age where I was gonna have children there were all these questions... what's expected of women in society and all these maternal feelings.

"There's always this expectation of us to look after everyone and I think it goes for women with and without children. I speak a lot about both in the book and this idea that we've been sold a bit of a lie."
