Oppenheimer leads this year's Oscar nominations with 13 nods from the Academy

Cillian Murphy and Oppenheimer have been pipped for Oscars success at this year's awards, as Entertainment Reporter Brian Rowe reveals his predictions for the biggest night in film for 2024.

Christopher Nolan's blockbuster leads the pack for this year's Academy nominations with 13 nods across the categories, including Best Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy and Best Picture.

The second most nominated film for this year's awards is Poor Things, starring Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo.

The critically acclaimed creation by Yorgos Lanthimos has picked up 11 gong nominations, with Emma Stone securing another Leading Actress recognition for her role as Bella Baxter.

The Oscars also caused controversy following the announcement of their nominees, as Barbie star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig were snubbed from their respective categories.

In a statement, actor Ryan Gosling said he was "honoured" to receive his nomination, but he was also "disappointed" to not be nominated alongside his colleagues.

Gosling told the Academy: "There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.

"To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement."

Speaking to GB News, Entertainment Reporter Brian Rowe has shared his predictions for the 96th annual awards ceremony.

Rowe revealed: "I would say the top category that has a race is Best Actor - it comes down to Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer or Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers.

"The Holdovers did not get into Best Director for Alexander Payne, which many were predicting, as was I. So that makes me think there might be a little bit of an edge for Cillian Murphy."

Rowe added that Cillian Murphy is most likely to win as he is "beloved in the industry" and it is his "first Oscars nomination".

Discussing the other big categories on the night, Rowe predicted other big wins for the Oppenheimer cast.

Rowe told GB News: "With Oppenheimer probably winning Best Director and Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr, it's looking like Cillian Murphy might win this thing in the end.

"Best Actress comes down to Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, or Emma Stone for Poor Things. I think that's the performance of the year. She is spectacular.

"She won at Golden Globes and at Critics Choice, so I think Emma Stone is looking pretty likely to win there too."
