Madison, 25, beat favourite Demi Moore and Wicked star Cynthia Erivo to the award

GB News host Eamonn Holmes has handed down his blistering verdict of the 2025 Oscars winners, claiming he has "no idea" who actress Mikey Madison is.

The Anora star, 25, picked up the gong for leading actress during Sunday's 97th Academy Awards, beating stars Demi Moore and Cynthia Erivo.

Discussing this year's winners, Breakfast host Eamonn Holmes questioned who Madison was, claiming that in the golden age of cinema, "film stars were film stars".

During an interview with Shadow Foreign Minister Wendy Morton, Eamonn said: "The point I'm trying to make is, in the olden days, film stars were film stars.

"Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, John Wayne, James Stewart, Cary Grant, they could go on forever."

He added: "You can't name any nowadays. There's nobody. And the films that win, it wouldn't make me get up on a Saturday night and go to the cinema."

Noting some female film icons, Eamonn stressed how Madison is unknown in the industry compared to stars such as "Bette Davis".

Eamonn explained: "The point I'm trying to make is, we're not talking about a Vivien Leigh or Betty Grable or Bette Davis.

"Mikey Madison? I have no idea who she is, and I know the type of film that they put forward."

Defending Madison's victory over the other more well-known nominees, GB News Digital Entertainment Editor Alex Davies suggested it is time to "bring in a new era" of young actresses.

Alex joked with Eamonn: "It's time to bring in a new era, a new dawn - I'm just glad that some of the nice information I've been delivering this morning has clearly stuck!"

Questioning how Madison was chosen as the winner, Eamonn asked: "The people who vote for the Oscars, who is the Oscars committee?"

Alex explained: "It's the Academy, so you'll often hear when they go up and do their big speeches, they say thank you so much to the Academy. It's not voted for by the public or anything like that.

"There's just a select number of people who, over the years, have come under fire for having a reputation of being stuffy old white men. They wouldn't. For example, this year, a lot of people didn't expect The Substance and Demi Moore not to do well, and it didn't because that's the sort of genre that they don't tend to care for."

Madison played a sex worker in the low-budget film Anora, which follows her character's marriage to a Russian oligarch's son.

In her acceptance speech, Madison said: "I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me. So to be here standing in this room today is really incredible."
