Michael Mosley's wife Dr Clare Bailey raised the alarm that her husband didn’t return from St Nikolas Beach at 7:30pm on Wednesday evening, with fears now emerging the star may have been "swept away at sea".
An appeal that was posted to Facebook stated: "They are expected to arrive by about 1pm. Have you seen this man? He set off to walk back from St Nick's at about 13.30 and failed to make it home.
"His friends are concerned as it is 6 hours since they last saw him. His name is Dr Mike Mosley and he is a familiar face for many British people."
It has been reported that the police are heading up the investigation, which indicates they believe he has gone missing on the land and is being assisted by the coastguard.
In a new development of the case, it is now feared that the star has been "swept away at sea" with a representative for Mosley telling Metro.co.uk: "We have no further information yet and are sitting tight hoping for some good news."
The mayor of the island, Eleftherios Papakalodoukas, has since spoken out and said it's "impossible" for Mosley to still be where some people saw him return from the beach, after claiming he spoke to some witnesses before his tracks were lost.
Michael went away to Greece with his wife for a holiday
Journalist Niki Kitsantonis also reported: "There are fears he might have slipped. It’s quite rugged terrain in that area, and there are lots of high points you could slip off.
"The mayor of the island is worried he has perhaps swept away at sea," she told Good Morning Britain.
The new information comes as an extreme heat warning has been issued in the area, as temperatures are set to rise as high as 48C on Friday, June 7.
Thousands have grown concerned about Mosley's whereabouts, with his Radio 4 colleague Nick Robinson discussing the "strange" turn of events during his morning show.

He told viewers: "Many of you are waking up tremendously concerned about the welfare of our missing Radio 4 colleague Michael Mosely. He went missing while on holiday on the Greek Island of Symi.
"Dawn is a Symi resident who is a friend of the person Michael Mosley was staying with and she has actually just spoken to 5 Live about the journey he would have taken back from the beach."
During her appearance, Dawn told 5 Live: "It is probably a 20-minute walk down the side of the mountain but it is not overly rugged or something that would be seen to be too dangerous, it is something that tourists do every day.
"It is extremely worrying for everyone, it seems very strange. With all the amount of people that come, the millions of people that come I think... this has never happened before so obviously he will be found as soon as possible with the least damage to everybody."

Senior Police Spokesman Constantina Dimoglidou said regarding Mosley's disappearance, according to the Daily Mail: "He was at the beach of Ag. Nikolas with another couple when he decided to go back to his home in the area of Pedi of Symi
"It was around 1:30pm and he forgot his phone at the beach. Any and every attempt to track him down has not produced any result. We have now asked the fire brigade to assist in the operation in the case that he may have slipped, tripped, fallen, even bitten by a snake, remaining injured somewhere.
"There is just no trace of him. None whatsoever and that means that for us at least, every potential scenario is open and being investigated."
