Director Tyler Perry opened his home to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they left the Royal Family

Meghan Markle’s close friend Tyler Perry has been blasted by film fans following his new Netflix movie.

The actor and producer directed Netflix’s Mea Culpa, with the romantic thriller landing on the streaming platform last week.

Perry opened his home to Markle and Prince Harry when the couple first moved to America in 2020 after leaving the Royal Family and appeared in the duo's Netflix documentary series.

The couple, along with their son Archie, lived in the 54-year-old's Beverly Hills home for a few months before they moved to a home in Montecito.

Perry found fame as an actor before focusing on directing and producing, and just days after Mea Culpa landed on Netflix, he faced criticism from several viewers over the “boring” plot.

Starring Kelly Rowland, the film follows her character, a criminal defense attorney, who agrees to defend a man who’s been accused of murdering his girlfriend.

However, X, formerly Twitter, has been flooded with complaints and backlash to the new flick ever since it became available to watch.

“This movie is boring… #MeaCulpa,” one user wrote while another fumed: “#MeaCulpa is the worst movie I’ve seen in a long time. The acting so terrible it was cringe to watch, the storyline so predictable and boring, what a waste of time.”

“#MeaCulpa has got to be the worst movie ever made,” a third stated, while a fourth echoed this strong view, writing: “That movie was the worst movie ever #MeaCulpa.”

Someone else penned: “Ok, that was spectacularly bad, even for Tyler Perry. Mans was so desperate for a plot twist, that s*** ain't make so sense #MeaCulpa.”

Some disagreed though, with one person adding: “Maybe i like trash tv buuuut #MeaCulpa wasn’t THAT bad.”

A-lister Perry offered his support to the Sussexes after their sensational exit from the royals.

Speaking on NBC’s Today back in 2022, he said of the couple: “Yes, it was a very difficult time for them. What I know about the two of them, that I wish the world knew, is how much they love.

"These two people love each other. The love they have is really, really moving and I just wanted to do anything I could to support them,” he added.

A Netflix synopsis describes Perry's 18-rated film reads: "A criminal defense attorney must choose between family, duty and her own dangerous desires when she takes on the case of an artist accused of murder."

A few of Perry's other directing credits include The Single Moms Club, A Fall From Grace and Nobody's Fool.

Several of his films have come under fire from critics, with some claiming his works use offensive stereotypes.
