The Beatles' "final song" Now and Then has been released

GB News star and Beatles fan Martin Daubney struggled to hide his emotional reaction to the band's newly-released single Now and Then on Thursday's The Live Desk.

Four and a half decades after John Lennon first put pen to paper for the demo of the track, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr - with the help of Peter Jackson and AI - managed to put the finishing touches to the single which also includes guitar from the late George Harrison.

As soon as the single hit the airwaves, fans across the globe were left "in tears" at hearing the quartet back together on new music for, what is billed to be, the final time.

And Daubney was equally overcome when he first heard the track 45 years in the making, telling viewers minutes after its release: "I did say before the break there may be a tear stain on my lapel.

"I just listened to Now and Then, the last ever Beatles song. I think it's breathtaking, particularly Lennon's vocals because this demo has been on YouTube for over eight years and the vocals were very hard to ascertain.

"Peter Jackson's AI from the Beatles movie has almost brought John Lennon back to life. It's astonishing, it's almost like Lennon is there!"

A passionate Daubney continued: "It's really moving. Paul McCartney's bassline is really technical, he's still got it.

"Ringo's drumline - this is all new, this is all recorded by the artists recently, about a year ago.

"Putting in George Harrison's guitar that he laid down himself before he passed away. The guitar solo is very, very emotional.

"And the way it ends, the sort of trademark Beatles string fades to silent, I think a fitting payoff to an astonishing career. It's beautiful," he added as he took a breath.

Later on The Live Desk, Daubney and Emily Carver heard from veteran of the music industry Nick Stewart who agreed it was an "exciting" feat for the band.

After Stewart described Now and Then as a "charming song", Daubney weighed in: "I completely agree Nick.

"I listened to it a few moments ago, I've heard the demo for many years, it's been on YouTube from that cassette.

"So we were all eagerly waiting to see particularly John's voice had been extracted and improved.

"I don't know about you Nick but when that first note of Lennon's dropped on this track, my spine was tingling. The hairs were standing on end - an absolute delight!"

Daubney's wasn't alone in sharing a rather emotional reaction to hearing McCartney, Lennon, Starr and Harrison back together as fans everywhere took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts.

One fan joked alongside the band's post promoting the single: "I’m not crying YOU’RE crying. (I am crying) #TheBeatles."

While a second echoed: "Oh my god. I’m crying. That was amazing. #NowAndThen #TheBeatles."
