The 49-year-old claimed he is “not good to be around” when his cancer diagnoses is putting him in pain
Jonnie Irwin has been spending time in a hospice as the father-of-three’s terminal cancer diagnosis leaves him in chronic pain.
Irwin, 49, even travelled overseas for treatment following his lung cancer diagnosis in 2020.
The former A Place In The Sun presenter subsequently underwent a medical procedure which caused irreversible damage to his liver.
Irwin is yet to tell his three young sons about his condition.
He is also not completely sure how long he has left after his lung cancer spread to his brain.
Irwin recently spoke to Hello! Magazine about his diagnosis, claiming he removes himself from his home when he faces chronic pain.
The much-loved presenter said: “I remove myself on a number of occasions because I'm not good to be around when I'm in pain.
“I'm like a bear with a sore head and I don't want them to be around that.”
Addressing his imminent death, Irwin added: “It can happen at any time.
“I’m here to stop it for as long as possible.”
Irwin spoke about his cancer diagnosis last year but feared opening up earlier could put his job chances at risk.
However, the 49-year-old fears telling his three sons would “confuse” them.
He said: “I keep being asked, 'Are you going to tell them?' but tell them what?
“It would be horrible news that they'd have to get their heads around.
“And it would confuse the hell out of Rex – he's got a shocking enough day coming.
“Let's bury our heads in the sand for as long as possible.”
Irwin will also leave behind his wife Jessica Holmes.
The pair tied the knot in September 2016.
The family lived in the Hertfordshire town of Berkhamsted and later moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
