Jaws 2 actor Marc Gilpin has died at the age of 56 after battling with cancer.

The child star rose to fame after appearing as the younger son of Roy Scheider’s police chief Martin Brody in the 1978 sequel of Stephen Spielberg's Jaws.

Jaws 2, which was directed by Jeannot Szwarc, was Gilpin's first major break.

The film was released in June 1978 as Roy Scheider and Lorraine Gary reprised their roles as Chief Brody and his wife.

However, the on-screen couple's sons Michael and Sean, portrayed by Chris Rebello and Jay Mello in the original, were replaced by Mark Gruner and Gilpin in the second film.

Gilpin later appeared on NBC’s CHiPs and ABC’s Fantasy Island.

He starred in the The Legend of the Long Ranger and Earthbound in 1981.

Gilpin's acting career ended after working on the 1989 movie She’s Out of Control.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

He instead opted to become a software engineer.

The child star's older sister Peri Gilpin, who is also an actress and appeared in Frasier, announced his death.

The 56-year-old reportedly died in Dallas on Saturday after battling with a fast-growing and aggressive brain tumour.

A fundraiser was set up last year to help Gilpin, his wife Kaki and their two sons as the family grappled with the "unimaginable" situation.

More than 2,000 people are diagnosed with glioblastoma each year in the United Kingdom, a study from University College London has revealed.

The grade four brain tumour is often fatal, with diagnosed patients rarely surviving beyond five years.

For most people diagnosed with glioblastoma the life expectancy is between 12 to 15 months.

The cancer begins in the brain and almost never spreads to other parts of the body.

Gilpin leaves behind his wife of 24 years Kaki and sons Spencer, 18, and Presley, 16.
