Musician Kyle Gass sparked outrage with his comments on Sunday

Jack Black has decided to cancel the remainder of his band Tenacious D's tour following comments made by bandmate, Kyle Gass.

On Sunday evening while performing in Sydney, Australia, Gass sparked outrage when he joked about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Pennsylvania.

The former US President was shot in the ear by a 20-year-old shooter at a rally on Saturday evening, while one attendee was killed and two others hospitalised.

Hours later at their gig, Black asked bandmate Gass to make a wish to mark his 64th birthday.

The musician appeared to reply to Black in front of concertgoers: "Don't miss Trump next time."

On Instagram, Black has now distanced himself from the remarks and put "all future creative plans on hold" in response to Gass' comments.

"I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday," Black began. "I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.

"After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold.

"I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding."

Black's decision comes at the same time Gass released a statement of his own apologising for the joke.

Also on the social media platform, Gass penned: "The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake.

"I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement.

"I profoundly apologise to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused."

The controversy caused by Gass had already led to the duo postponing a gig in Newcastle, New South Wales, on Tuesday.

The comments by Gass were met with widespread outrage from fans across the globe and even led to calls for the duo to be "deported".

United Australia senator Ralph Babet led the calls and branded Gass' comments as "disgusting, filthy and evil".

Black has been a vocal supporter of President Joe Biden leading up to the US elections later this year.

Just days after the shooting, Trump returned to work duties and received an emotional standing ovation from supporters at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee.

Trump was joined on stage by his newly-appointed running mate, Vice-Presidential pick, JD Vance.

The former President took to the stage wearing a bandage over his ear following the shooting on Saturday.
