The drama has pulled in a global audience, with fans across the pond also delighted by the news

Detective drama Grantchester has been renewed for a tenth series, with fans desperately excited for more episodes of the 1950s-set series.

A recent announcement about the upcoming series has left viewers in meltdown on social media, which comes after the shock news Tom Brittney decided to exit his role as the leading man of the show.

The series has raked in a global audience, with US viewers currently enjoying series nine while UK audiences continue to wait for a release date of the ITV drama.

Following the announcement that series 10 had been confirmed, fans were quick to express their excitement.

Taking to X, one wrote: "Great news!! #GrantchesterPBS is the gift that keeps on giving!"

"Only thing I don't like about it is that it's too darn short!" Another commented.

"I'm actually looking forward to the vicar switch! I mean I really like #Will but now that he's happy in the life he created for himself and Bonnie, a new face will bring a freshness to the show. Also looking forward to Esme getting her own storyline... #Grantchester," another enthused.

"Oh is Grantchester back with a new dishy vicar," a fourth shared, while someone else confessed: "All y'all hyped for the new season of House of the Dragon while I'm over here watching Grantchester. We are not the same."

While most fans were happy to hear the news, not everyone agreed.

One person admitted: "I've lost interest also….just not that interesting anymore…same formula each season. #Grantchester Along with #CallTheMidwife….nothing new to see. @masterpiecepbs." (sic)

Series ten is set to see newcomer Rishi Nair taking over as the new vicar of the village, Reverend Alphy Kottaram, with Robson Green Green reprising his role as DI Geordie Keating.

James Norton left his role as Vicar Sidney Chambers in series four, with Brittney replacing him as Reverend Will Davenport, but the latter's exit doesn't seem to have deterred too many fans.

Filming for series 10 is set to begin next month and will eventually air on PBS in the US and ITV in the UK.

Masterpiece executive producer Susanna Simpson said of the show's series 10 news: "I couldn't be happier to recommission Grantchester for a 10th season.
