The actor, 85, suffered a fall at London's Noel Coward theatre

Sir Ian McKellen has been taken to hospital after falling off stage during a performance in London.

The 85-year-old Lord of the Rings star had been performing in a fight scene in Player Kings at the Noel Coward Theatre in the capital on Monday when the incident happened.


According to reports, the actor lost his balance and fell from the stage.

The BBC reports the audience has been evacuated from the theatre and the show has been cancelled for the night.

The extent of McKellen's injuries aren't yet known but it is understood the actor cried out in pain as staff rushed to his aid.

McKellen had been playing John Falstaff and was immersed in a battle scene when he fell.

Player Kings, a production of Henry IV, parts one and two, adapted and directed by Robert Icke, is due to move to the Bristol Hippodrome in July and will also be staged in Birmingham, Norwich and Newcastle.

Speaking to the BBC, one audience member deemed the incident "very shocking".

"I really hope that he is going to be alright," they told the broadcaster.

"As far as I saw, he was conscious because he was asking for assistance."

Videos circulating online show queues outside the theatre after the cancellation.

A witness who posted a photo of the theatre on X penned: "Audience shocked by Sir Ian McKellen’s fall off stage tonight at Noel Coward Theatre. Staff working hard to help him.

"Thoughts with him, cast and crew. #playerkings."

Another penned: "Wasn't sure if it was part of the play. He sounded in a bad way. Hope he's ok."

Another witness added: "It was very shocking indeed. Praying he is OK!"

"Shocking to watch, it was a terrible fall. Hoping he is not badly injured, he seemed to be in great pain," another remarked.

McKellen's representatives and the ambulance service have been approached for comment.
