How to watch Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance as star of memoir announced as Trump's running mate

The American drama film was directed by Ron Howard following a screenplay by Vanessa Taylor.

It is based on Vance's memoir of the same name and sees Vance looking back on his childhood in Middletown, Ohio.

Vance was raised by his mother, Beverly and her parents, who were from Jackson, Kentucky.

The memoir follows his mother's drug addiction as he and his older sister, Lindsay, struggle to handle her unstable behaviour.

The news of Vance's appointment as Trump's running mate emerged at the start of the four-day Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to nominate the party's presidential ticket.

Vance had previously criticised the former President, saying he was a "never-Trump guy" in 2016 adding he didn't see him "offering many solutions".

Vance's selection means Trump passed over other possible contenders including US Senators Marco Rubio, Tim Scott and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.

As explored in his Netflix memoir, Vance suffered a troubled and impoverished childhood before he served in the Marine Corps, won a scholarship to Yale Law School and later worked as a venture capitalist in San Francisco.

The film adaptation can be watched on Netflix in UK. The Netflix film stars Gabriel Basso as Vance, Glenn Close as his grandmother, Bonnie "Mamaw" Vance, Amy Evans as Beverly and Haley Bennett as Lindsay.

The film began a limited theatrical release in the US in November 2020 before streaming on Netflix soon after.

Vance will now serve as Trump's running mate in the US presidential election in November.

"I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator JD Vance of the Great State of Ohio," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, as reported by The Telegraph.

He continued: "JD honourably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association.
