“BBC and Channel 4 were hand-wringing on everything. ‘My goodness me, it’s the end of the world. What are we going to do?’
“I take the view that this is our country and our money. It’s up to us to decide what we want to do. If we want to spend it on foreign aid, fine. Nobody has asked me.

“Like me, no one has had a say on where this money goes but BBC and Channel 4 are wringing their hands with the whole thing.
“There’s only so much we can do. There’s people sleeping on the streets, people starving, we have people who can’t pay their heating bills and we’re complaining about everything else in the world.
“We cannot solve the world’s problems, so why are we trying?”

The announcement came during a statement to the House of Commons on Tuesday.
Sir Keir explained this means spending £13.4bn more on defence every year from 2027.
The UK will also recognise the contribution of intelligence services, meaning "taken together we will be spending 2.6 per cent on our defence from 2027".
The prime minister announced that the increase in defence spending will be funded by cutting the foreign aid budget.

The budget will fall from 0.5 per cent of gross national income this year to 0.3 per cent in 2027.
The announcement comes amid increasing pressure on NATO allies from US President Donald Trump, who wants European countries to raise defence spending to five per cent of GDP.
This level of spending was last achieved during the Cold War.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch welcomed the announcement on "repurposing money" from overseas development.
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey backed the increase but called for seized Russian money to be used instead of cutting aid spending.
Sir Keir said "Russia is a menace in our waters, in our airspace and on our streets" and that "tyrants only respond to strength".
The prime minister added that the UK must meet a new global era "together, and with strength".
