Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has issued a worrying update about his future on the show, which may leave fans devastated.

Over the last few months, the ITV soap has announced six cast exits from the show, leaving long-term viewers worried about what is to come.

Now it seems the team at Coronation Street could be set to axe another of their major characters as Shepherd has an update ahead of his 25th Anniversary in Weatherfield.

His recent storyline has involved his mother, Gail Platt (played by Helen Worth), moving to France with her new flame to start a new life.

David soon lost his family home in a horrific blaze, which was started by his stepson Max Turner (Paddy Beaver) in a bid to use the insurance money to pay off gangster Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor).

Max is now facing six years in prison, leaving David to realise he had nowhere to go and had a plan of his own death when he stepped out in front of a moving vehicle.

Now, the actor has spoken out about his character's rough time and what could be in store for him in the future, issuing a worrying update.

He told The Sun and other media at a press day: "I was only in the show three months originally, and then they just kept on sort of ringing my mum up, and my agent saying, ‘Yeah, we'll extend it.’

"So, yeah, 25 years is a long time, I think, for anyone. But I get year contracts now, I don't get three-months ones.

So, I'm only ever here for like, another year, so. It runs out this year, [laughter] so they might not continue it! They might go with someone else, but I'm still enjoying it."

When asked whether we would stay for another 25 years, Shepherd teased: “I think a contract at a time. You know where you are then.

"I think if they were to say… Well, they couldn't promise that, could they? They couldn’t promise a 25-year contract. They don't know what's going to happen.

"So, I think it works in both of our favours just to do the year. But if it did end up being another 25, I don't mind.”

Away from the Cobbles, Shepherd has been rumoured to have signed up for this year's Celebrity Big Brother.

Over the last few months, stars have continued to be axed, including Colson Smith, who has played Craig Tinker for 14 years.

Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year, with his exit coming soon after his on-screen mum Beth Tinker (Lisa George) being written out from the role.

Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, is leaving the soap after 25 years, with it being reported in January that the star had already filmed her exit scenes – however, the character will not be killed off in case Cleaver ever wants to return.

Luca Toolan, who played Mason Radcliffe, was axed just 16 months after he first joined the show – despite being involved in some heavy storylines.

In November 2024, it was revealed that Sue Devaney’s character, Debbie Webster, would be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline.

Daisy Midgeley actress Charlotte Jordan became the fifth star to leave with sources claiming that she's hungry to see what other opportunities await.

Shelley King, who has played Yasmeen Metcalfe for 11 years, finished filming her final scenes back in January and will depart the show to follow her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter (Bill Fellows).
